Argo AI's Peter Rander joins the Board of Directors at the Pittsburgh Robotics Network
The Pittsburgh Robotics Network (PRN) is pleased to announce the addition of Peter Rander, the President & Co-Founder of Argo AI, to the organization’s Board of Directors.
Rander is a seasoned leader in the development of complex, autonomy-enabled systems, as well as the organizations that build those systems. Passionate to see robotics technology improve the world, he has consistently pursued opportunities to help make that change happen, from working on a number of commercialization projects at the National Robotics Engineering Center at Carnegie Mellon University to being part of the formative team that launched Uber’s self-driving car efforts. His core robotics work spans computer vision, perception, path planning and control, and simulation-based robotic system development and testing. Rander has also led numerous human-centric robotic interface programs that leverage underlying autonomy technologies to aid human operators at multiple levels of interaction. Peter holds a master’s degree (1993) and a Ph.D. (1998) in electrical and computer engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and a bachelor’s degree (1991) in electrical engineering from the University of Detroit-Mercy.
Argo AI, which was co-founded by Rander in 2016, is a global autonomy products and services company headquartered in Pittsburgh, with engineering centers located in Detroit, Cranbury, NJ, Los Angeles, Palo Alto, and Munich, Germany. The company is on a mission to make the world’s streets and roadways safe, accessible, and useful for all. With a team of more than 1,700 people across the U.S. and Europe, the Argo Autonomy Platform and Solutions are designed to support autonomous ridesharing and goods delivery at scale to benefit communities around the world.
"Peter Rander is a recognized leader not only in the Pittsburgh autonomy cluster, but also in the global robotics and automotive industries," says Joel Reed, Executive Director of the Pittsburgh Robotics Network. "Pete was an early advocate for the PRN and the community, and we are fortunate having collaborated with him for the past few years. We are excited to formalize our relationship by adding his vision and guidance to our Board."
Rander will serve on the Board alongside representatives from world-renowned research institutions such as Carnegie Mellon’s School of Computer Science and the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Computing and Information, leading robotics companies such as HEBI Robotics, Neya Systems and Carnegie Robotics, industry champions such as J.P. Morgan and Dentons, and fellow Pittsburgh-based autonomous vehicle pioneer Aurora.
Together they will work to achieve the PRN’s vision of making the Pittsburgh robotics ecosystem the largest and most advanced in the world.
